SUMMARY:EM Forster's Legacy of Connection: Unseen Memorabilia
DESCRIPTION:The novelist E.M. Forster's famous maxim was 'only connect.' A member of the 'Bloomsbury set' who lived in Brunswick Square for years\, Morgan Forster acted out this maxim in his life.\n\n A lifelong believer in gay rights and critic of restrictions based on race and class\, he famously had a 30-year friendship with working-class policeman Bob Buckingham. But the connection did not end there. Forster had a wider influence on the whole Buckingham family\, including Bob's nephew Jim Buckingham who was inspired to follow privately his passion for painting.\n\nNow in his 80s\, Jim Buckingham has a collection of never-before-seen Forster memorabilia\, letters\, photographs and his own unseen life's work of paintings including portraits of Forster himself\, Bob Buckingham and other family members\, and a series around the theme of ancestry.\n\nThe exhibition offers new insights into E.M. Forster's legacy of connection\, as well as into Bloomsbury working class history.\n\nhttps://www.townspot.co/event/em-forsters-legacy-of-connection-unseen-memorabilia-e73cd80f-3260-445a-a0e0-8ef58202945d

Journalist and feminist punk musician Stephanie Phillips reclaims the past and future of rock 'n' roll for the Black artists who tore up and re-wrote its rules.\n\nIn her book We Were Here\, she repopulates music history with the extraordinary Black artists and influential figures who truly steered its course from the 1930s to the present day\, including vital figures Sister Rosetta Tharpe\, Little Richard\, Jimi Hendrix\, Tina Turner\, Betty Davis\, Poly Styrene\, Bad Brains and beyond. In her Ethical Matters talk\, Stephanie explores why Black people have continued to be drawn to alternative music despite their ongoing ostracisation from it by the white mainstream industry\,\nand looks to the future with the Gen Z Black musicians experimenting with the boundaries of what punk\, metal\, hardcore and indie can be.\n\nhttps://www.townspot.co/event/ethical-matters-a-history-of-black-people-and-alternative-music-659f9937-2b8d-4ddc-97a7-8ddc7ab6692f

SUMMARY:Lunchtime Recitals: Edward Lloyd
DESCRIPTION:November 2026 sees the launch of our new collaboration with the Royal Northern College of Music. In five recitals across the 26/27 season\, the RNCM's leading pianists will present a rich and varied programme of piano music\, showcasing the exciting talent of young emerging artists.\n\nTo begin the series\, Edward Lloyd performs one of Franz Liszt's most visionary\, mystical cycles\, which takes its inspiration from the poetry of Parisian Romanticism and traverses a vast emotional and spiritual landscape. From the grinding\, deathly bells of Funérailles to the opulent and luminous tenderness of Bénédiction de Dieu dans la Solitude\, we sense a monumental\, epic narrative force-one which will reach far into the future\, inspiring masterpieces like those of Richard Wagner with its scale and majesty.\n\nThis concert will be preceded by a film discussing the works created by the performer.\n\nPROGRAMME:\n1.10pm\n\nLiszt | Harmonies poétiques et religieuses S173\n\n- Invocation\n- Miserere\, d'après Palestrina\n- Pater Noster\n- Hymne de l'enfant à son réveil\n- Andante Lagrimoso\n- Funérailles\n- Pensée des morts\n- Ave Maria\n- Bénédiction de Dieu dans la solitude\n- Cantique d'amour\n\nhttps://www.townspot.co/event/lunchtime-recitals-edward-lloyd-b4311f53-fc25-4147-bfb4-1ed182504a3a

SUMMARY:Ethical Matters: Why Pubs Matter
DESCRIPTION:Pubs are an essential part of British culture in all its forms - there are rock and goth pubs\, student pubs\, gay pubs\, Irish pubs\, Caribbean pubs\, vegan pubs and desi pubs. Pubs can be music venues\, theatres\, art galleries\, lecture spaces and community hubs. But they are endangered by rising beer prices\, tax and business costs. This and the competition from huge chains means that pubs are closing in the UK as just under two a day.\n\nPubs grow roots for communities and are a place to share ideas: the place to go to discuss the film you have just seen\, the art you just encountered\, the evening class\, the football match\, long walk or the fascinating ethical discussion you have just enjoyed.\n\nJoin sociologist Amit Singh and pub artist Lydia Wood as they discuss the need to recognise the importance of our pubs and what we can do to preserve them\n\nhttps://www.townspot.co/event/ethical-matters-why-pubs-matter-4b951983-2f9b-4351-9bf6-b6d7ff7338af

SUMMARY:Sunday Concerts: Woolf Quartet
DESCRIPTION:"It's rare to feel a thread of concentrated energy through an entire concert - not an easy feat for musicians to achieve - but the Woolf Quartet... succeeded in doing just this." SUMMARY:'Chalice' lunchtime concert
DESCRIPTION:Chalice is the new musical project from Minimum Labyrinth: Ian Blake (reeds)\, Rich Cochrane (guitar and electronics)\, Nicolas Hajdu (bass) and Robert Kingham (narrative).\n\nChalice blends spoken words with atmospheric music created in the moment\, drawing the audience into a world of mystery\, philosophy\, folklore and transcendence. Every performance is different: you might hear texts drawn from medieval poetry\, speculative philosophy\, literature both high and low\, ancient religion\, or pieces written by Chalice members themselves\, often cut up and juxtaposed to create a constellation of ideas.\n\nIf the world feels uphill to you\, then come and take a break from it all\, and find some moments of peace and beauty\, lost for a time on a musical journey. Expect soaring saxophones resounding off the church walls\, meditative bass notes\, ethereal guitar\, and words to lead you through time and space.\n\nChalice is delighted to perform its first public concert as a fundraiser in support of Bloomsbury Central Baptist Church (five minutes' walk from Tottenham Court Road). All proceeds will support this marvellous haven and sanctuary in the heart of the glaring city.\n\nhttps://www.townspot.co/event/chalice-lunchtime-concert-4a4842c8-3482-4a15-84dd-ed6c68d01576

DESCRIPTION:October Gallery presents 'Caliban'\, the second solo exhibition by Puerto Rican artist Rafael Trelles. In this powerful new series\, Trelles transforms one of Shakespeare's most contested characters into a potent symbol of Indigenous resistance to colonial domination.\n\n'Caliban' connects the colonial history of the Caribbean with contemporary questions of identity\, migration\, racism and cultural displacement\, offering a poetic meditation on land\, memory and the right to define one's own story.\n\nKnown for his dreamlike\, magico-mythical paintings\, Trelles creates richly layered worlds in which light\, shadow\, flora and fauna converge. At the centre of this exhibition is Caliban\, the original inhabitant of the island in Shakespeare's The Tempest\, whose land and freedom are seized by the exiled Duke Prospero. Trelles radically reverses Shakespeare's perspective\, presenting Caliban not as a 'savage' subject to be controlled\, but as a figure of dignity\, resilience and agency.\n\nhttps://www.townspot.co/event/rafael-trelles-caliban-7524773c-965b-4ccc-a4d1-5bf7f346e35f

DESCRIPTION:Many neurodivergent people create and perform. It could be our over-active minds\, a need to carve out our own niche in the world\, or a need to express ourselves in a world that doesn't get us. Or maybe we seek creative outlets in the same way neurotypical people do. Through acting\, performance\, writing and music\, neurodivergent people are making themselves known.\n\nJoin us with multidisciplinary artist The Mollusc Dimension\, discussing his creative practice with an ND host. This event is for the ND people who are expressing themselves\, wish to start expressing themselves and want to understand how to and where the parameters are (and aren't). It is also for anyone\, ND or not\, seeking to understand people\, performance and creativity and how is can liberate and consol those of us who are different.\n\nhttps://www.townspot.co/event/this-year-the-haunted-landscape-our-annual-folklore-all-dayer-delves-into-the-realms-of-magic-fai-1cc641e9-9e7c-4363-88b5-80f69cfb6fcb

SUMMARY:Ethical Matters: AI and Online Disinformation
DESCRIPTION:Our social media feeds have been increasingly cannibalised by slop: low-quality content generated using AI text\, image and video tools. Slop takes many forms\, but in the UK it often promotes far-right narratives about immigration and Islam\, becoming what some have dubbed "slopaganda".\n\nAlthough slopaganda is overtly political in its content\, its motivations are usually commercial. Many social media accounts presenting themselves as British patriots are\, in fact\, operated from South Asia\, where a booming cottage industry has emerged around the mass production of AI slop.\n\nIn this Ethical Matters talk\, reporter Niamh McIntyre takes us inside the AI slop factory\, and explores what it means when a significant proportion of online political debate is manufactured for profit by people with zero commitment to the ideas they are promoting.\n\nhttps://www.townspot.co/event/ethical-matters-ai-and-online-disinformation-c28f8cd0-ce9f-417f-b5a0-5e30c192d4bd
