SUMMARY:Seeing the Potential
DESCRIPTION:The title\, Seeing the Potential\, an exhibition by artist Matthew Small\, speaks to the act of looking beyond appearances and present circumstances to recognise what might be possible. This idea runs through both Small's choice of materials and his approach to portraiture. Discarded metal and salvaged surfaces\, marked by their own histories\, are given a new life and purpose. \nRooted in the diversity and contradictions of Camden\, Matthew's practice is shaped by the rhythms of the city around him. His work asks us to slow down and look again: to recognise individuality within the crowd\, and to consider whose stories are seen\, remembered and celebrated.\n\nhttps://www.townspot.co/event/seeing-the-potential-96025239-fa44-4d42-a549-59cf3b4c9a71

SUMMARY:40 Objects\, 40 Years
DESCRIPTION:40 Objects\, 40 Years is a brand new exhibition from Freud Museum London\, reflecting the diverse nature of its collection. Sigmund Freud\, the founder of psychoanalysis\, moved to London with his family in 1938 to escape Nazi-occupied Vienna and spent the final year of his life in Hampstead\, which has been transformed to become Freud Museum London. Freud was an avid collector of antiquities\, and many of the most precious items from his personal collection have been brought out of his study to be seen up close. Family treasures are also on display: objects from the Freuds' domestic and personal spaces which illustrate the house as a former family home\, and items from long-term storage will be seen for the very first time.\n\nhttps://www.townspot.co/event/40-objects-40-years-506ccc4e-87ac-4aac-a357-203cbe29cf0e

His work asks us to slow down and look again: to recognise individuality within the crowd\, and to consider whose stories are seen\, remembered and celebrated.\n\nhttps://www.townspot.co/event/seeing-the-potential-899c9de1-fdc6-464d-b7a8-f98ae74fc59e

Family treasures are also on display: objects from the Freuds' domestic and personal spaces which illustrate the house as a former family home\, and items from long-term storage will be seen for the very first time.\n\nhttps://www.townspot.co/event/40-objects-40-years-20f2a18a-1be6-4c4c-8cfd-42e258cd8d5c

His work asks us to slow down and look again: to recognise individuality within the crowd\, and to consider whose stories are seen\, remembered and celebrated.\n\nhttps://www.townspot.co/event/seeing-the-potential-b11047f3-fce0-4a9e-a989-c5c15d8ad1b1

Family treasures are also on display: objects from the Freuds' domestic and personal spaces which illustrate the house as a former family home\, and items from long-term storage will be seen for the very first time.\n\nhttps://www.townspot.co/event/40-objects-40-years-b36f774a-303e-4716-bf16-fbffaaf9470a

SUMMARY:The Colonial Pact of Psychoanalysis and Violence Against Women
DESCRIPTION:Violence against women is often approached in psychoanalysis in two ways: as a reaction to the feminine\, understood as a marker of 'castration'\, and through the notions of helplessness and the drive dimension implicated in violence. This online discussion from Freud Museum London takes a different direction: asking to what extent the very concepts used to think about violence against women are rooted in a colonial framework. \n\nWhen gender and race are understood as tools of epistemological critique\, it becomes possible to recognise that some psychoanalytic formulations may themselves reinforce violence against women through their own assumptions and colonial influences. Taking this tension as a starting point\, we'll critically examine psychoanalysis itself and consider how the ideal of masculinity and the possibility of moving beyond colonial frameworks might open new ways of thinking about violence against women. \n\nThis event will be delivered online in Portuguese.\n\nhttps://www.townspot.co/event/the-colonial-pact-of-psychoanalysis-and-violence-against-women-437b2b83-f0ad-4771-8ef1-49cc65ba9f09

His work asks us to slow down and look again: to recognise individuality within the crowd\, and to consider whose stories are seen\, remembered and celebrated.\n\nhttps://www.townspot.co/event/seeing-the-potential-387bfdb9-25c3-4f2d-9e4b-22b7180d6efd

His work asks us to slow down and look again: to recognise individuality within the crowd\, and to consider whose stories are seen\, remembered and celebrated.\n\nhttps://www.townspot.co/event/seeing-the-potential-35830614-fdbb-4691-88a5-c04e3fce2f5a

Family treasures are also on display: objects from the Freuds' domestic and personal spaces which illustrate the house as a former family home\, and items from long-term storage will be seen for the very first time.\n\nhttps://www.townspot.co/event/40-objects-40-years-aaa9c2fa-54d4-4493-9b89-cb771cdd64a2
